Google’s cars are photographing the streets of Helsinki at the moment for the Google Street View service, told the local newspaper Vartti.fi. I’m just really delighted how Helsinki is going to be at it’s finest this time of the year, with no leaves in the trees yet, but tons of dirt and melted brown snow all around. Great, no tourist is even going to consider Finland after having a look at the Google Street View.
Who would have thought that Google will be trouble here as well, but these are the problems of the 21st Century Tourism Board; shitty images on Google Street View. Finland’s Tourism Board should “Search Engine Optimize” the streets or postpone the photo shoot. Hahah.
Nice post I like This Site, Thanks Man

Good point
Though, the project is probably going to take most of the summer, so maybe Finland is still going to be remembered as something else than “the land of million dusty piles of snow”.

Well, if they come during the summer, Helsinki looks like one big construction site so not sure which one works better for tourism.
Amazing Race on the other hand provided one brilliant view of this “buzzling metropol”. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=b3fOmf25VMQ

I live in London but I’ve been to Helsinki several times (winter and summer). Don’t worry about how it looks in the Google pictures, it is the most beautiful city in the world and its charisma transcends ephemeral scenes of the tail-end of winter; I love the city and I would give anything to live there. And don’t wish for more tourism – Helsinki is a gem: a well kept secret, and I hope it stays that way.

I also live in London, and I agree with the other Londoner. Helsinki is a wonderful secret, and I have spread my opinion of this wonderful city to my friends.

Guess that city is now (whereever it is) is going to be a tourst trap due to Google with a whole bunch of mcdonalds and 5 star snooty hotels that over-charge you.
It will then be next to impossilbe to find the off the beaten path friendly B&B.

Come on guys! I was a tourist in Helsinki during the 2007/2008 winter and love it!
Is a pleasant city, so don’t worry about “tons of melted snow” and stuff like that!

In my opinion Helsinki is by far the Finland’s ugliest city, great example of how not to build a city. Compare the pictures of Helsinki to the pictures of other big Finnish cities like Tampere, Turku, Oulu, Jyväskylä etc.

Helsinki is great at the summer time. uglies city… well i must partly agree but it doesnt make it that ugly… anyway the center of Helsinki is real and city-like. but problem of Helsinki is that its not looking like city that much afterall… because of areas around… vantaa, espoo, kauninainen (grankulla) and sipoo are towns around Helsinki. In fact they are suburbs around Helsinki… it should be one real city… because of those towns and “cities” around some peoples says that Helsinki looks like forest… or well not forest but you know. sparsely populated. empty areas between those towns… and then there is Helsinki-Vantaa airport which also destroys some of the city look… and from the rollercoaster of amusing park linnanmäki you can see pretty much of Helsinki. you see much trees. too much for a city. when you watch to north. (vantaa etc…) but in south/coast you see Helsinki. Real Helsinki is in quite small area afterall… but its beautiful. center is in the cape. part of me agrees that Helsinki has been built wrong… center is okay, but its too small and after that there is just suburbs after Ring one… till vantaa and to Järvenpää. population is too fragmented, it destroys part of the city’s vitality. but i cant say that those living areas around Helsinki are not beautiful, but it just makes Helsinki less city like. Helsinki would have enough peoples for big city but its not built that way. but those suburbs are beautiful and very green at summer time. when you watch from google earth its like the shire
i also recommend that you check out Lahti. of course its not very big one but its nice looking town at summer time.. if the pictures are taken at summertime… but Turku and Tampere are the actual ones to take look at. well then Oulu, Jyväskylä, Kuopio, Mikkeli, Hämeenlinna, Kouvola, … kokkola, vaasa, joensuu, lappeenranta….
