A friend of mine at work bought a puzzle for a present from Stockmann’s (the biggest department store in Finland) children’s department, just to notice that there was something seriously wrong with the puzzle.
Here’s some pictures of what the puzzle, that Stockmann is selling to kids, should look like when assembled.
EDIT: A reporter from Iltasanomat the largest tabloid paper just called me, asking about the puzzle.
EDIT2: At 2:14 pm, reporter from Huvudstadsbladet the biggest swedish speaking newspaper called.
EDIT3: hbl.fi and HS.fi wrote a piece on the puzzle finding.

What’s the puzzle’s name? I want one!

I think quite few 2000 piece puzzles are made for kids. Of course you can buy them one but I’m pretty sure a child wouldn’t have patience enough to actually finish it.

A bit of ‘attention-whoring’ to call that ‘S&M porn’. Exactly the same that papers like Iltasanomat and Iltalehti do.
Funny stuff that puzzle, though.

Having seen the whole puzzle, it’s not something I necessarily would buy for my kids, but I probably wouldn’t deny them that either. It’s just something one would have to be able to talk to the children about. (Assuming they are aged 10+)

Chill, people. That thing basically has tits on display. So did Samantha Fox when some of us were 11 years old.
The manufacturer’s minimum age seems to be 11 years. Wanted or not, your kids are somewhat conscious of “sex things” at this age. Probably looking up far more raunchy things over the internet on a daily basis. On the context of a tween and without adult understanding, those things are probably just very giggleworthy.

I would be hard pressed to call ugly pictures of naked mutant moles porn. I mean come on! You’re depreciating the value of the word. Who on earth would find that erotic? There is so much more artful drawn stuff out there.

Fly: So after your kids get +10 you start to talk them about how, when they get a little more older, they can also be strapped up naked in x position so a naked fat guy dressed up in leather can spank you and burn you with hot metal? I really hope not.
Stockmann Purchasing Agent: “I didn’t see the jigsaw and pictures on the internet were too small” So no comments, what? Who saw it then, did Stockmann start selling them without anyone ever seeing the product? And the pictures here are NOT small and you can see everything important. (Unless you are blind, what would also explain not seeing the product then
)
Taneli: This is really far from innocent. Kids shouldn’t need to see this kind of stuff. And I’m not being hysteric, but if people are somehow defending Stockmann that it’s not even so bad to sell these, when kids already are beeing blasted 24/7 with sick anorexic models in advertisement and watching bullshit cartoons from tv, where some girls need to get expensive makeup so the become more sexy, I really need to point out my view. I dont find any reason why the hell should kids live and grow up surrounded by this kinda harmful culture (because there isnt any). I’m afraid there’s gonna be masses of f*cked up adults (especially girls) in the future, because of this twisted and neurotic behaviour on how one should look, and how important it’s supposed to be, they had to try to grow up with.
Where is this world going when everything society has to offer for children is sex, sex and more sex?
By: Mikko on January 16, 2009
at 5:25 pm
Mikko you’re gonna grow up a lot when/if you get kids and they start asking questions about things they see around. Your hysteric comments are full blown “denying-the-obvious” double starndardism.
I’m gonna explain the fat guy and the X-position to my kids all the way. People do things, really, even if they seem quite scary, for a reason. Including sadomasochism. You won’t frighten your kids to a mental state by letting them know how you think about weird stuff – rather the opposite.
I’d be more worried if my kids had to deal with all kinds of shit just by themselves.

A toy marketed to children depicts naked females tied up and having their genitals mutilated — as if this is healthy behavior. Calling this “just a joke” or the people rightly upset with it “hysterical prudes” is a minimization techique of pedophiles, rapists, and assholes.

“Stockmann’s (the biggest department store in Finland )” There’s your answer. We need to stop these scurrilous Scandinavian porn terrorists from engaging in their sinister activities, undermining global stability and decency with cheeky cartoons depicting nudity and all manner of saucy antics. No wonder Arch Premier Gordon Brown froze the assets of those in their area! Their particulars must be exposed for the world to see! (preferably the Swedish blonde ones first!!!)

well, yesterday I had to deal with 7 boys (ages 13-14) standing in a tight circle, facing each other pretending to, in their words “jerk-off” (on the school play ground). One of them did not know the correct word (masturbate). The first 5 brought in to talk (individually) admitted immediately what they were doing. The last (the director of the group) stated they were “playing with light sabers”.
So, I assume they would be better served by having these puzzles to put together at their recess instead. Or perhaps as a class project, or perhaps we can send home a recommendation in the parent newsletter.

It’s a fine puzzle for adults. I actually like the art; but I could see kids getting freaked out by the emphasis in those parts of the puzzle on the violence that can be done to women’s bodies. I would want my girl child, especially, to develop a sense of ownership over her own body before having to deal with the violent uses that can be made of such bodies, consensually or non-consensually.

If this is being marketed to children, there is no doubt in my mind that it is patently exploitative. The visual messages of male power and control over women as hostages in bondage is obvious. This is what you want your children or grandchildren to be seeing, absorbing and putting together for what passes as human relationships?

To Milla:
I hope you really do realize that finnish grammatic rules do not apply in the English language. So please do not use commas if you don’t know how to properly use them.
To the blog:
I can’t really see how this puzzle could harm little children. It has naked woman but how often do you think that a little child could connect a naked woman and a leather punisher to S&M porn? It’s rather unlikely that they would do so.
I also think that the blogkeeper hasn’t watched a single episode of Rölli in the past. Drinking this “magic drink” which happened to be Jack Daniels, and then having a massive hang over isn’t quite the thing that I’d like to present to my children. I think that Rölli is way more harmfull to little children than this puzzle.
By: N on January 16, 2009

I looked on the website for this puzzle on amazon..and it says that it’s for ages 11 and up. Still, I find it unsuitable for that age.
I am sure there are kids that age that are already getting exposed to nudity whether it’s on television or on internet, etc.

WTF is wrong with people. In the first puzzle, a naked female is bound while a clothed male prepares to flog her. The second puzzle is a naked female in bondage being taken up stairs. The third puzzle has teeth that spear into a female’s breast. All three puzzles are non-consensual and show violence against a female by male(s). And people are saying this is not harmful for children! What planet are you on? Would you give this to your daughter and have her believe this is part of being female? If you do you are sicker than a little bit. Would you give this to your son so that abusing females is seen as normal and fun? What the hell is wrong with the males in this society? You say nothing is wrong? I say everything is wrong. Girls don’t have a chance in this world, thanks to males like many of you.

To N:
“but how often do you think that a little child could connect a naked woman and a leather punisher to S&M porn?”
Does a kid actually have to CONNECT a naked woman and a leather punisher to the term S&M porn to make it bad? So it is ok for a kid to see something that can be regarded as a sexually violent act as long as he doesn’t know the right term?
The comparison to Rölli’s little aftermath is cute but I guess it is more common and accepted if a child sees one’s parents the day after few glasses of whiskey but probably not dressed in black leather and spanking each other.
Steadycat has a point.

By: AflacGa on January 17, 2009

Steadycat (and all the other readers taking the anti-porn feminist viewpoint):
It’s called a Castle of Horror, not a Castle of Titillation. The female(s) are SUPPOSED to be being attacked in the scenes depicted in the puzzle. Otherwise the title wouldn’t make sense.
But then, I wouldn’t give this to my nieces, nephews, other children or their parents…nor to some male friends of mine. This definitely takes an adult view of many horror stories and scenes everyone knows about.
And 2000 pieces? Don’t think many kids would WANT to work on such a puzzle. I know I don’t.
By: godozo on January 17, 2009

Nyotahura, you think this is “funny, yummy and terrific”? Are you blind or crazy?
Let’s see. Then you also would think comical drawings of blacks being lynched were funny. And cartoons of children tortured were just yummy. And skits of waterboarding, ooh that’s just terrifc?
No?
So you do have some compassion for your fellow human beings’ suffering? Just not the suffering of women, their agony amuses you. What’s different, women are not human?
By: Susanna on January 17, 2009

I would say that it depends totally of the kid wether this would be suitable or not. Explaining the philosophy of sadomasochism happens anyways in the school sexual education in ages between 13-15.
Surely it’s better to learn this stuff from own parents than watching it accidentally from internet the first time. There is nothing wrong or violent in sadomasochism, it’s a roleplay based on psychology of power. If both parties agree and enjoy I would hardly call it bad. This kind of stuff should be explained to children by their own parents not by school anyway.

Susanna: the things depicted are not “hostile, violent and horrible” – they are depictions of sex acts, even if they are not compatible with your vanilla view of what constitutes sex. To each his/her own (yksi diggaa äidistä, toinen tyttärestä ja kolmas perheen koirasta).
Can’t say I really understand all the hype about this puzzle. I remember browsing for rather more disturbing material when I was in elementary school. Remember, parents: your kids are not as innocent as they appear or as you’d like them to be!

steadycat… is only one puzzle that includes all those images and every image is about 2cm big.
It was sold in the section where you find only puzzels of over 1000pieces… and let me tell you that a child itself would have never ever found those without help…. those are design for adult taste, whether you like or not…
I would strongly recommend to put yourself above this kind of humor… this is just a puzzle!!! you should be more upset everytime you go shopping… have you seen what is being sold to little girls?? well I have… and I must admit that most of the time end in the boys section beacuse i’m tired of this idea of a girls being dressed all in pink and glitter, not to mentions the horrible designs!!! and have you seen all the videogames??? the more you kill the better player you are!!!
